NSW:Legislation makes it easier to set sentencing guidelines
SYDNEY, Dec 2 AAP - Legislation passed in the New South Wales parliament overnight will
make it easier for the appeals court to set guidelines for criminal sentencing, Premier Bob
Carr today said.
Rather than waiting for a controversial case, Attorney-General Jeff Shaw will now be able
to refer a range of offences to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal for guideline judgments, Mr
Carr said.
"These guidelines tell judges what the appropriate range of penalties are for particular
offences," Mr Carr said in a statement.
He said Mr Shaw was considering a range of offences which might require guidelines from the
court.
