Political fights could unravel Portugal's bailout

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal's massive rescue package was threatened on two sides Monday — by internal political squabbling and external bailout fatigue among EU neighbors — and it was not clear whether the proposed deal would last.

A delegation from the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission — bodies that will raise the estimated €80 billion ($115.5 billion) bailout for Portugal and oversee its use — is expected in Lisbon on Tuesday for initial talks.

European finance ministers agreed Friday to put up the money Portugal needs, making it the third country in the 17-nation eurozone to accept a huge financial lifeline.

Capsaicin activation of the pain receptor, VR1: Multiple open states from both partial and full binding

ABSTRACT Capsaicin, the pungent ingredient of hot peppers, has long been used to identify nociceptors. Its molecular target, the vanilloid receptor VR1, was recently cloned and confirmed functionally as a polymodal detector of multiple pain stimuli: heat, acid, and vanilloids. Previous electrophysiology studies have focused on whole-cell characteristics of the receptor. Here, we provide the first in-depth single-channel kinetic study of VR1 to understand its activation mechanism. At low to medium concentrations, channel activity appeared as bursts. Not only did the durations of the interburst gaps vary with capsaicin, the bursts also appeared ligand-dependent, with high capsaicin …

New frequent flyer freebies aimed at business travelers

Northwest, Midway and Continental airlines Friday joined thethree biggest domestic airlines in offering a new freebie forfrequent flyers that's aimed at business travelers.

The alacrity with which the airlines rolled out theirThreebie-Freebies reflects lots of unsold seats.

Delta Air Lines started the movement Tuesday in announcing itsfrequent flyers can earn a free trip by flying eight segments betweenDec. 15 and March 15. A segment is one leg of a trip so a personmaking one connection on both parts of a round trip would fly foursegments.

By Thursday evening, American and United airlines had toppedDelta's offering as they revealed that members of their frequentflyer programs could earn a free ticket with three (nonstop) roundtrips, the equivalent of six segments.

The big three carriers said free tickets had to be used betweenMay 15 and Dec. 15 or 31, depending on the airline, on flights withinthe 48 states and to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. ButNorthwest sweetened its special by offering one free ticket to Europefor five round trips or 14 segments and a freebie to Hawaii for sevenround trips or 20 segments. And Continental said its flyers can earna free first-class ticket with nine roundtrip or 24 segments.

The other airlines said credits can be used for upgrades tofirst class and additional segments and round trips earn up to threefree tickets. Various restrictions including availability, a minimumone-way ticket price and Thanksgiving and Christmas blackouts apply.

The carriers admit they are trying to fill unsold seats in whatis traditionally the slowest quarter of the year.

Fukudome 'the perfect fit'; Hendry gets his man, bringing Japanese star to North Side with four-year, $48 million deal

The Cubs got their Japanese outfielder Tuesday night, resultingin another free-agent whiff for the White Sox.

When the Cubs reached agreement with Kosuke Fukudome on a four-year deal believed to be worth about $48 million, they beat out afield that included the Sox and the San Diego Padres while achievingtheir top offseason goal.

"It's a great addition for us," Cubs general manager Jim Hendrysaid. "He's a guy we've wanted from Day1. We've probably been onthis constantly for about 60 days. It's a great ending."

The Sox, meanwhile, made it 0-for-3 this offseason on swingingfor big names, having lost free-agent center fielder Torii Hunter tothe Los Angeles Angels and then Florida Marlins third baseman MiguelCabrera when the Detroit Tigers swooped in for a six-player tradeinstead.

Cubs evaluators have had Fukudome, 30, in their sights since2004, Hendry said, and the timing couldn't have been better when hebecame a non-restricted free agent after the 2007 season.

"He's the perfect fit," Hendry said.

The Cubs needed a right fielder and desperately needed a left-handed bat for the middle of the order. Fukudome has a legitimateright-field arm with enough defensive ability and athleticism toplay center if needed, giving the Cubs a fallback if the Felix Pie-Sam Fuld youth movement doesn't pan out.

He's also a two-time Japanese Central League MVP with a lifetime.397 on-base percentage -- a major commodity for the Cubs' lineup. He has enough power to project to about 15 to 20 homers a year andenough speed to hit-and-run and go from first to third on a regularbasis -- another rarity for the Cubs.

"He's exactly what we were looking for," Hendry said.

Manager Lou Piniella, who called Fukudome a cross between IchiroSuzuki and Hideki Matsui, said last week he expected to bat the newCub fourth or fifth in the order. Fukudome already has requested --and will receive -- uniform No. 1.

Fukudome hit .351 with 31 homers and 104 RBI for the ChunichiDragons in an MVP season in 2006 but was limited to 81 games duringthe Dragons' championship season in 2007 after having relativelyroutine surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.

While it's risky to project what Fukudome can do in his firstyear in the majors, his defensive skills, speed and strike-zonediscipline translate to any league. And the Cubs are confident he'llhit well enough to provide gap power, if not the occasional home runat hitter-friendly National League Central parks in Cincinnati andHouston and Wrigley Field in the summer.

By focusing on Fukudome, the Cubs built their offseason plansaround a timetable they knew early on would move slower than Hendryis used to following.

"We had no assurances we could get somebody else tomorrow [ifFukudome fell through], so it was a gamble," Hendry said. "But wefelt like if we were going to gamble, gamble on the 'A' player.Don't gamble on the 'B-minus' player."

The Cubs also had the luxury of focusing on just a few playersthis winter instead of overhauling the roster as they did last year.Getting Fukudome makes the offseason successful in the Cubs' eyes, even if they don't get the second left-handed bat they'd like to addby spring training.

The Cubs might look to pursue Baltimore Orioles second basemanBrian Roberts more aggressively now that Fukudome is done.

"There's nothing wrong with the lineup we have now," Hendry said."If he's in right and [Mark] DeRosa's at second, we're certainly ina happy position. But this puts us in solid position to now make asolid decision if something comes our way, rather than reactingbecause we didn't get the guy we wanted.

"We haven't given up our prospects yet, so in any deal, we'repositioned to deal more from a strength position. If we hadn'tgotten Fukudome, we might have been in position where we would havehad to lump four or five players in for a player we needed, and hewouldn't have been as good as the one we got."

Help women̢۪s soccer make a well-deserved comeback

Ladies, it's time to stand in solidarity with your soccer-playing sisters.

If you spent even a moment cheering last summer when the U.S. Women's Soccer Team competed in the World Cup finals against Japan, you need to know that those internationally renowned sportswomen may not get to play next year.

If you'll recall, women's soccer reached a fever pitch in July and made front-page news. The final was seen by 13.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched and highest-rated soccer telecast on an ESPN network, and the second most-watched daytime program in cable history, according to the Nielsen Co.

But the three-year-old Women's Professional Soccer league (WPS) is anxiously waiting to hear from Chicago-based U.S. Soccer, the sport's governing body, about whether they'll be able to move forward in 2012, buoyed by unprecedented fan and sponsor interest in the sport.

Not surprisingly, before last summer's blockbuster performance, women's soccer hadn't exactly taken off. Women's professional sports and soccer don't exactly seem like a profitable combination and the economic climate the league was launched in — the first WPS game was played in March of 2009, three months before the "official" end of the Great Recession — made instant success all but impossible.

Our WPS team, the Chicago Red Stars, suspended operations almost exactly a year ago due to lack of funding, though the team averaged the second-best attendance in the league in both 2009 and 2010. Then South Florida's team, MagicJack, went under this past October, bringing the league down to an anemic five teams — one each in Atlanta, Boston and Philadelphia and two in New York.

That's the crisis: U.S. Soccer's bylaws require all professional leagues to have a minimum of eight teams, and though WPS had gotten annual waivers, U.S. Soccer might not take that leap of faith this year.

"We were in Chicago last week to make our case to the U.S. Soccer task force, who will then make a recommendation to the entire board of directors, for why we should be granted another waiver and we will continue those discussions until they're ready to make their final decision," said CEO of Women's Professional Soccer, Jennifer O'Sullivan.

"There's a lot more at stake here than just professional women's soccer. The league provides a place and an opportunity for the U.S. to develop that next generation of national team players who can compete in the Olympics and the World Cup," O'Sullivan continued.

Though last summer's excitement led to many new franchise investment and sponsorship opportunities, O'Sullivan said, there just wasn't enough time to add three new teams in time for the 2012 season. And while the Chicago Red Stars had hoped to resume operations next year, she said, they're still a few investors away from starting up again — if there's league play.

I had not heard of this drama playing itself out in the world of professional women's soccer until an old friend tipped me off, but it turns out that women across the country are doing all they can to get U.S. Soccer to give the ladies just a little more time.

So far, more than 47,000 people have signed an online petition, at charge.org, asking U.S. Soccer to allow WPS to remain a sanctioned league.

Electronic advocacy might be the least one can do to support a worthy cause, but sending a Tweet, posting a link to Facebook or signing a petition might spark a little of last summer's magic when the world watched the United States women soccer players shine.

SEC expands stocks under 'circuit breakers'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators on Friday expanded the number of stocks covered by new "circuit breakers" that can pause volatile trading, a program in response to the panicked May 6 market plunge.

The Securities and Exchange Commission approved expansion of the six-month pilot program of circuit breakers for stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 index. Now all stocks in the Russell 1000 index also will be covered. The expansion was proposed to the SEC by the stock exchanges and had been expected.

The pilot program, which began in mid-June, briefly halts trading of stocks that make big price swings. Trading of covered stocks that rise or fall 10 percent or more within a five-minute span is halted for five additional minutes.

The "flash crash" on May 6 saw the Dow Jones industrials plunge nearly 1,000 points in less than a half-hour. About 30 stocks listed in the S&P 500 index fell at least 10 percent within five minutes.

Regulators and lawmakers have acknowledged that the massive disruption undermined investors' confidence in the financial markets.

U.S. stock exchanges and the brokerage industry's self-policing organization are expected to begin putting the expanded circuit breakers into effect early next week, the SEC said in a news release.

The trading halts "give the markets an opportunity to attract new trading interest in an affected stock, establish a reasonable market price, and resume trading in a fair and orderly fashion," the agency said.

The regulators haven't pinpointed a single cause for the May 6 breakdown. They have cited a number of factors, including a severe draining of cash from the market that may have been worsened by the withdrawal of electronic traders and the use of so-called 'stop-loss" market orders. Stop-loss orders set the price at which a stock is automatically sold when it declines to a specified level.

The SEC commissioners also approved new rules, proposed by the exchanges, that spell out when and at what prices erroneous stock trades should be canceled.

Nearly 21,000 trades were canceled in the market plunge because exchanges deemed them erroneous. Many retail investors were affected. SEC officials have said the goal is to bring consistency to the rules governing broken trades.

"These circuit breakers and this more objective guidance on breaking erroneous trades will help our markets retain the confidence of investors and companies," SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro said in a statement. "We have worked quickly with the exchanges to take these steps, and we will continue to be very focused on addressing weaknesses exposed on May 6."

Schapiro said in a speech Tuesday that anxiety over the flash crash may have contributed to the withdrawal of retail investors from the stock market in recent months.

Schapiro also called the circuit breakers for individual stocks "an essential first step" that can be improved. She said the agency's next steps likely will include a review of so-called "limit up-limit down" requirements that would bar any trades outside specified boundaries. Limit up-limit down restrictions, which apply to the commodity futures markets, impose a maximum price change higher or lower in a given day.

The SEC already has rules requiring market-wide halts in trading if the Dow average falls 10 percent, 20 percent or 30 percent. They also are known as circuit breakers. None of them were triggered on May 6.

Under the new rules for canceled trades, stocks covered by the circuit breakers will have their trades broken at certain levels.

For stocks priced $25 or less, trades will be canceled if they diverged by at least 10 percent from the circuit-breaker trigger price. For stocks at $25 to $50, trades will be canceled if they diverged by at least 5 percent. Stocks above $50 will have to diverge by at least 3 percent from the circuit-breaker trigger price to be canceled.

There will be a different set of thresholds for stocks not covered by the circuit breakers.

Like the circuit-breaker regime, the new rules for broken trades will be in effect through Dec. 10.

Mandy Moore gets backs to basics on new CD

Mandy Moore doesn't mind being perpetually seen as the "good girl" _ even if she thinks that image is a bit skewed.

"You know what? It's fair to say that I am proud and honored that the perception out there is that I'm a good person. That's, to me, the highest compliment. I try to be a good person," the 25-year-old entertainer said in a recent interview. "But I don't think it's completely accurate to say that I'm just good. There is balance in life. You can't have good without a little bad."

Her latest album, "Amanda Leigh," may underscore her point. At first listen, the perfectly perky first single, "I Could Break Your Heart Every Day of the Week," sounds like something tailor-made for today's tweens. But listen again and you'll hear a lyric, co-written by Moore, which sounds as if it was coming from a dominatrix: "Squeeze the life out of you/Wrap you in sheets/I could break your heart any day of the week."

"It's very tongue in cheek, not to be taken to heart by any means," Moore said. "It's sassy, if you will, and a little edgier and no-nonsense _ a side of myself that doesn't really come out too often. But it was sort of fun to go there for the sake of the music."

With a folk-rock-pop fusion, "Amanda Leigh" _ which takes its title from her given name _ tips its hat to mid-1970s era Joni Mitchell and also pays homage to Paul and Linda McCartney's crunchy-granola classic "Ram" (1971). The CD also marks Moore's first release with indie Storefront Recordings after a decade with major recording labels.

"Starting out when you're 14 and signing to a major record label sort of in the heyday of pop music and overspending and sort of all that gluttony, it's really nice to sort of really come back to what's important," said Moore, who first rose to fame as a 15-year-old with the bubblegum song "Candy," then matured in her sound and style over various recordings and became known as an actress for films including "A Walk to Remember."

When she was in the early stages of putting together the album, Moore's ex-boyfriend, DJ AM (Adam Goldstein), and musician Travis Barker were seriously injured in a September plane crash that killed two crew members and two other passengers. Moore sprinted to be at his side in an Augusta, Georgia, burn unit _ which, Moore said, some media outlets took the wrong way.

"It kind of saddened me," she recalled. "When everything went down it was like, 'Oh, they're dating again.' I was like, 'In this day and age with everything that's going on in the world, it made me sad that there was not a value to friendship,' which, to me is often more important than the other stuff, anyway."

Earlier this year, Moore married famously tortured singer-songwriter Ryan Adams. Moore says the indie artist couldn't help but influence her new album just by his presence _ but he didn't contribute in any direct way.

Though some of considered the union an odd pairing, Moore bristles when it's suggested that the "good girl" and her new alt-country husband are a case of opposites attracting.

"To be perfectly honest, I can understand the interest and fascination with our relationship, but there's definitely more than what meets the eye," she said. "I don't think it's a very yin-and-yang relationship. In fact, I feel like we're probably a lot more like most people would imagine and that's wonderful. ... Life is good. I lucked out."

NATO peacekeepers to stay on in Kosovo

NATO's peacekeeping force will remain in Kosovo after the new country's constitution comes into force next month, the secretary-general said Friday.

Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the 16,000-strong force, known as KFOR, will remain in Kosovo after June 15, when Kosovo's authorities are to take over control of the country from U.N. administrators. A European Union policing mission will be sent in to mentor the fledgling country's leadership.

NATO has not yet set a final deadline for its mission in Kosovo, and Scheffer's announcement that the force would remain was largely expected. It is also good news to Kosovo's leaders, who depend on NATO to help maintain security in Europe's newest country.

Scheffer, on a brief visit to the Bulgarian capital, also told reporters that it is important that the U.N. and the European Union determine their responsibilities in Kosovo after June 15.

The U.N. has run Kosovo since the war between ethnic Albanian separatists and Serb troops ended in 1999. Kosovo's Parliament declared the province's independence from Serbia this year.

The NATO-led force includes more than 1,000 U.S. troops, mostly National Guard members.

Seattle FBI investigating Somali suicide bombing

FBI are investigating whether an American Somali was involved in a suicide bombing on a peacekeeping base in Somalia that killed 21 people, a family friend said Friday.

Abdirahman Warsame told The Associated Press that FBI agents in the city of Seattle took DNA samples from Mohamed Mohamud, cut off his phone lines and warned him not to speak to the media. He had been at the family's home on Thursday, two days after FBI agents visited.

They told Mohamud his son Omar may have been in one of two stolen U.N. cars that Islamic insurgents detonated in an African Union peacekeeping base last Thursday. The markings on the cars meant they were not subject to the usual security checks and were allowed onto the base. Seventeen Burundian and Ugandan peacekeepers were among the 21 killed in the Sept. 17 attack, al-Shabab, a local Islamic militia, said was in retaliation for a U.S. commando raid on Sept. 14 that killed al-Qaida operative Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in southern Somalia.

Mohamud had been prepared for the visit by the U.S. federal agents following Internet reports that an American had been involved in the bombing and calls from relatives in Somalia, Warsame said.

"Relatives in Somalia told Mohamed that his son was the bomber who detonated one of the cars. He was very disappointed that his son has died in Somalia," said Warsame. "He was in mourning."

Al-Shabab, a powerful Islamist group with foreign fighters in its ranks, claimed responsibility for the last week's attack. This week it released a video pledging allegiance to al-Qaida and showing foreign trainers moving among its fighters.

If proven, the case would be the second instance of an American-Somali suicide bomber in Somalia. Shirwa Ahmed blew himself up in October 2008 in the northern breakaway republic of Somaliland as part of a series of coordinated explosions that killed 21 people.

Ahmed came from Minneapolis, where law enforcement officials are also investigating the disappearance of up to 20 Americans from the Somali community. Two men from the city, Abdifatah Yusuf Isse and Salah Osman Ahmed, have been charged with aiding terrorists.

Islamic insurgents fighting in Somalia's bloody 18-year-old war have been recruiting English-speaking Somalis with a series of videos and recordings on the internet. They are fighting to overthrow the U.N.-backed government, whose forces currently only hold pockets of the capital with the help of some 5,000 African Union peacekeepers.

South Works forges into history // Southeast Side era closes along with aging steel plant

One hundred and twelve years is a long life for anyone.

And South Works' closing today after more than a century ofservice to the city and the nation will be mourned by a lot ofChicagoans for much more than its longevity.

The structural steel mill at 3430 E. 87th St. enabled itsworkers to buy homes, send their children to college, and enjoy amiddle-class life.

During World War II, the steel mill employed 20,000 workers, symbolizing Chicago's industrial might.

But South Works slowly began to lose its muscle. By January,it employed only 650 workers and USX Corp. announced that it wasclosing the plant, which covers 585 acres of lakefront property.

The grand old man of steel no longer could compete withultra-modern, non-union mini-mills that made structural steel muchless expensively than South Works.

Before deciding to shut the factory, USX and Local 65 of theUnited Steel Workers of America tried to find someone willing toinvest $140 million to modernize the plant.

They found no takers.

Obama's got a lot in common with Bush

On the eve of the Democratic convention, consider a contrarian idea: How Barack Obama is like President Bush.

Won't back down. The Iraq War is central to the political fortunes of both. Bush's presidency will be judged by it. Obama's early opposition to it was crucial in his defeat of Hillary Clinton. At key times, Bush and Obama stubbornly followed policies that could have ended in defeat.

After the success of the invasion, it became clear that the Bush administration had no clear post-invasion strategy. Bush ignored advice that the U.S. had too few troops in Iraq and implemented destructive plans such as disbanding Iraq's army. Only last year did Bush finally yield to the urging of people like Gen. David Petraeus and Sen. John McCain to launch the military surge.

Despite the surge's obvious success, Obama clings to the position that his original opposition to it was correct. What's more, during the darkest days of Iraq, Obama formulated a troop pullout plan that would have had American soldiers retreat from the battlefield and acknowledge defeat. His plan still calls for firm timetables for withdrawals, but recently he has suggested he'd let facts on the ground influence the pullout.

Arrogance. Bush is damned by his critics as a cowboy who pursues unilateral foreign policies that alienate the rest of the world. Obama is labeled by his critics as an out-of-touch elitist. They point to his condescending remarks that small-town America bitterly clings to its guns and God. His speech to 200,000 Germans in Berlin was seen as his acting like he was president without benefit of an election.

Claims of bipartisanship. Bush promised to be a uniter, not a divider. He became one of the most polarizing politicians to hold the White House. Obama promises to put the bitter divisions of the past behind us and work across political lines. Yet, unlike Bill Clinton, the only successful Democratic presidential aspirant in the last quarter century and one who practiced centrist politics, Obama campaigns on a traditional liberal agenda. The record shows that, unlike McCain, Obama has never worked across the legislative aisle on an issue that could put him at any discomfort with his party.

Slow to respond. Nothing was so damaging to Bush's presidency as the federal government's belated response to the destruction Hurricane Katrina wreaked on New Orleans. Washington's bungling left everyone asking: If the government can't cope with a natural disaster, how could we be confident it could handle another terrorist attack?

Obama, not having held executive office, doesn't have a record of responding to crises. Yet, his performance on the campaign trail has raised questions about his being slow on the draw. During a Democratic presidential debate, Obama and Clinton were asked to respond to the scenario of a terrorist attack on two U.S. cities. Obama talked about an effective emergency response, good intelligence and better international relationships. He had to come back later with a better response after listening to Clinton give the right answer: retaliate. Recently, it took Obama three tries to catch up with McCain's accurate assessment of the Georgia-Russia crisis.

Inexperience. Bush came to the White House after just six years as governor of Texas. How big a factor that was in the failures of his presidency will be examined by historians for years. Obama spent eight years as a backbencher in the Illinois Legislature before his election to the U.S. Senate. By inauguration day, he will have served just under four years there. But as National Review Online noted, Obama had held his Washington post only two years and 12 days when he formed his presidential exploratory committee. He has spent the 18 months doing more campaigning than legislating.

Yes, many differences separate Obama and Bush, but as Americans pick their next president, they might want to consider the ways the Democrat seems similar to the one they've got now.

Security tight in Myanmar as death of Aung San Suu Kyi's father commemorated

Hundreds of riot police and soldiers ringed a monument in downtown Yangon on Saturday as officials gathered to commemorate the shooting death 61 years ago of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's father.

Myanmar independence hero Gen. Aung San and other government leaders were assassinated by gunmen during a Cabinet meeting on July 19, 1947, shortly after Britain granted independence to the Southeast Asian colony.

Flags were flown at half staff in the capital to mark the day, a state holiday. Unlike past years, foreign diplomats were not invited to the tightly guarded wreath-laying ceremony at the Martyr's Monument located near the famed Shwedagon pagoda.

Opposition activists have suggested that the ruling military junta is trying to downgrade the importance of Aung San's legacy as a way of undercutting the popularity of his daughter, who remains under house arrest.

Diplomats in Yangon said the Foreign Ministry had informed them that the government intended this year to hold a low-key ceremony because it comes just two and a half months after Cyclone Nargis devastated much of the region south of Yangon, leaving at least 85,000 people dead and about 50,000 missing.

Police cordoned off the monument, putting up heavy metal barriers and coils of barbed wire across roads.

Dozens of policemen carrying assault rifles and shotguns manned the barricades during a heavy downpour.

Security was also tight around the headquarters of Suu Kyi's political party, the National League for Democracy, which said it would hold a separate ceremony.

In a statement, the NLD urged the junta to "immediately and unconditionally" release Suu Kyi and other detained pro-democracy activists.

Suu Kyi has been detained for more than 12 of the past 18 years.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, has been under military rule since 1962.

Suu Kyi's party swept the last general elections in 1990, but the military refused to hand over power.

The international community has increased pressure on the junta since it violently quashed peaceful mass protests last September. At least 31 people were killed and thousands more were detained.

Staying Inspired

I've been playing bass since I was your typical, socially awkward 13-year-old teenager. Fm now 42. That's a lot of years spent noodling about in the low tones section of music.

What is it that makes me continue to play bass?

Music in my teens led me to joining my first bands, which in turn led to that notion of feeling like I was a part of something bigger than myself. I felt less like a geek. Playing bass made me feel good. Learning how to figure out songs made me feel good. Hanging out with other like-minded musicians made me feel good. I was definitely into being a team player for sure. Playing music and plunking away on my bass had such a positive effect on me during those odd teenage years. You know, those years where you aren't a little kid anymore but you're still too young to drive a car or go to a club or hang out with the cool older crowd. It also saved my ass from getting kicked by the local rednecks/jocks on more than one occasion as I was known as "...that guy, he's in a band and they're sorta cool...". Bass can sometimes save you from a punch in the eye! I still love that feeling of belonging. Whatever musical situation I am in, I know I am part of a group and I like that very much.

When I was starting out, inspiration came by listening to a lot of bass players like Paul McCartney, Gene Simmons and John Entwhistle. Concentrating on what the bass player was doing/playing became everything to me as far as music went. At the time "songs" were not as important as the bass parts I was trying to learn. I continued this trend for a number of years. Old school prog, new wave, hard rock, reggae, jazz, etc., all seeped into my brain. As my own playing developed and matured and as my tastes in music changed and then changed again I began to understand something fundamental: music should serve the song and not the other way around. This concept is always inspirational to me when I'm approaching new ideas for bass.

An interesting bass line can underpin an equally interesting vocal melody or song structure. Sometimes it can be a major component as in The Police's "Walking On The Moon", Bjork's "Army OfMe", QOTSA's "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" or Franz Ferdinand's "Tell Her Tonight". Hearing something new that has a great bass line makes me appreciate being a bassist.

Another thing that keeps my interest is the ability to play other instruments. I highly recommend learning how to play any instrument that is available to you. Being able to sit at a piano and make some musical noise, bashing away on a set of drums or coming up with an interesting riff on an electric guitar! enables my head to clear if I start feeling bored or static on my main instrument. Also, these little musical excursions can, and do, trigger possible bass lines. I've come up with totally different concepts for bass parts while fooling around on the drums or finding cool low-end patches on a synth.

While on tour with Sarah McLachlan for Lilith Fair, I watched Sheryl Crow perform on a nightly basis for a couple of months. As well as being accomplished on many other instruments, she is a also very fine bass player. There are a number of artists out there who are well known for their skillful singing, songwriting, guitar playing or producing, but not so much for their bass playing. I count among them Keith Richards, Brian Wilson, Aimee Mann, Trevor Horn, Jimi Hendrix and Pierre Marchand. What inspires me is how these various artists/producers approach writing, playing and recording bass. Because it's not their main instrument, there can be a real uniqueness, a real "non bass-like" quality to their lines - something less stereotypical or obvious. One great example would be The Rolling Stones song "Sympathy For The Devil". Keith Richards took the song's deceptively simple three-chord pattern and constructed a relentless, driving, almost lead guitar kind of approach, to his bass line. He played lots of snaky improvised little fills over that now classic samba-esque rhythm all without sacrificing the groove. His bass playing really complements the manic piano playing of Nicky Hopkins and later on his own razor sharp guitar solo. There is a French new wave art film by Jean-Luc Godard called Sympathy For The Devil, which captures Richards in the studio piecing that song together bit by bit. Worth checking out for fans of the brilliant late '60s version of the band.

One final thing. I was so happy when a whole series of mid'70s Brian Eno solo records were recently re-released onto CD. I highly recommend picking up copies of Another Green World, Here Come The Warm Jets or Before And After Science as music I find continually inspirational.

Jesse Jackson wants apology for Sherrod's ouster

The Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling for an apology from the Obama administration for ousting an Agriculture Department employee now at the center of a racially tinged firestorm.

Jackson said he talked to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack late Tuesday night before Vilsack said that he would reconsider his department's decision to ask Shirley Sherrod to leave her job.

Vilsack issued a short statement early Wednesday morning after Sherrod said she was pressured to resign because of her comments that she didn't give a white farmer as much help as she could have 24 years ago. Until Tuesday, Sherrod was the department's director of rural development in Georgia.

Reports: 2 people investigated for launch of unauthorized "George Clooney"-branded clothes

Two people are being investigated for alleged fraud after attempting to launch a clothes line with a brand using actor George Clooney's name, a news report said Thursday.

The U.S. star said someone is pretending to be him to launch the line of clothes.

"If someone tries to sell you clothes or watches that are based on me, don't buy them," Clooney told reporters Wednesday in Rome, where he was promoting his new film "Leatherheads."

The ANSA news agency said Milan tax police on Wednesday seized about 20 garments and watches, as well as fake documentation. The agency said the line was to be launched in Milan next week.

ANSA said the probe stemmed from a complaint filed by the actor.

Tax police in Milan were not immediately available to confirm the reports.

College-Town Record Stores Shuttering

You need a college, of course, but that's not the only ingredient in a good college town. You need quirky bookstores. Coffee shops _ preferably not all chains. A diner. An artsy cinema. A dive bar.

There's one other thing you need, and it's getting harder to find: a local record store. The kind of place with poster-covered walls, tattoo-covered customers, and an indie-rock aficionado at the cash register, somebody in a retro T-shirt who helps you navigate the store's eclectic inventory.

A few years ago on just one block of Chapel Hill's Franklin Street, the main drag in what's been called America's ideal college town, four or five such places catered both …

PANAMA ANTI-U.S. BENT BOLSTERED.(Main)

Byline: United Press International

President Manuel Solis Palma replaced seven of his 12 ministers Sunday, strengthening the government's anti- U.S. bent in the first major shuffling of Panama's Cabinet since he took power in February.

Meanwhile, electrical power to some U.S. Embassy offices and residences was cut off, apparently because utility bills have not been paid under orders from President Reagan that are designed to financially cripple military strongman Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, sources said.

"This is not a war Cabinet, this is a fighting Cabinet to combat U.S. economic aggression," Solis Palma said at a news conference after the appointments were announced. "This is not a Cabinet to declare war on the United States, just a Cabinet to confront aggression that we are facing."

Keeping crime at the center of the political debate, Gov. Mario Cuomo on Friday ordered the Legislature to meet on Martin Luther King Day to consider gun control legislation and other anti-violence measures.

Cuomo previously had invited lawmakers to hold a session on the King holiday Monday, but Republicans who control the state Senate had refused. The Assembly's Democratic majority had agreed to meet.

With that, the Democratic governor turned to his rarely used constitutional power to order a special session. Cuomo can only make lawmakers meet; he cannot force them to vote on anything. Noting that, the …

America, circa late 1998, is a nation in the throes of contradiction. Across the political spectrum, few dispute the basics: It's about sex. It's about morality. It's about when walls fall, when the intimate becomes the public, when ``Jerry Springer'' spills into ``World News Tonight.''

The Starr Report has crystallized this paradox, sending Americans into a mind-spinning realm of distaste, double entendre and self-analysis. We say high-mindedly that we don't want to hear any more, yet many Americans just couldn't help watching the daylong coverage and cracking cigar jokes. …
