FED: Terrorists could be among refugees Le

Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK's spokesman says the government has taken up the
issue of identifying asylum seekers after accusations that terrorists could be arriving
undetected.

Refugee worker MARION LE says poor intelligence about the origins of many of the boat
people could be leading to criminals claiming refugee status in Australia.

Ms LE says 80 per cent of people from the middle east are granted refugee status, yet
in many cases Australia doesn't really know who they are.

Mr RUDDOCK has foreshadowed new measures in the New Year to give immigration officials
greater ability to identify illegal immigrants.

His spokesman says these will include the power to conduct fingerprinting and DNA testing.
